Amate comes from the Nahuatl word meaning “tree leaf”. The Amate is extracted from the inside of tree barks, and is used as canvas to create artistic paintings.
Its origin dates back to pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica. Nowadays, this type of art can be found in the Otomi community of San Pablito, located in the county of Pahuatlan, Puebla.
The skins used in this collection are treated with 100% vegetable materials. This means that different natural products are used in its tanning process instead of using chemicals harmful to the environment. These natural products are usually branches of trees and plants, such as chestnut and tare, rods, roots and nuts, which are made to dust and are used to tan the leather.
The anilines used to give the color to your bag, as well as the waxes that create the two-tone effect, are of vegetable origin.
For this reason, any irregularity that is noticed in the skin is an effect of the natural process. As a suggestion, do not expose your bag to the sun for a long time as you may notice some oxidation in the color, as it happens with the fruit.
